THE ROLE AND PURPOSE OF MES
THE ROLE AND PURPOSE OF MESManufacturing execution systems (MES) are multifunction software systems designed to manage production operations. This category of software was named in the 1980s and has evolved and grown since that time. Just as manufacturing operations and software technologies have changed, MES has evolved as well. As a result, the fundamentals of MES today overlap with, but certainly are not the same as the fundamentals of MES in the 1980s, or even in the early 2000s. (In fact, in batch process industries, the term "Manufacturing Operations Management" has taken hold to represent this broader and more modern style of production management software.)In 1997, the Manufacturing Execution Systems Association (MESA) created its White Paper #6,
