What Is Photovoltaics? Photovoltaics is the process of converting harvestable sunlight into usable consumer electricity. The basic device that allows for this conversion to take place is called a solar cell. Currently, there are several different types of cells being used successfully: crystalline silicon, amorphous silicon, thin film, CIGS, CdTe, gallium arsenide, and others. Among these cells, crystalline silicon is the most widely employed with the highest energy conversion efficiency.
