MAJOR CHALLENGES AND POTENTIAL SOLUTIONSThe field of PE is fast evolving with the newest material technologies and mechanical engineering technologies. One reflection of this is the rapid expansion of the range of materials the PE technologies can process. Piezoelectric inks, semiconductor inks, biological inks, and other functional inks have been added to this set in recent years. The viscosity of the ink is also less of a limitation with the newly developed processes. For example, aerosol jet printing, which is one of the newest members of PE technologies, can theoretically process inks with any viscosity within a range of 1 to 3000 cP, whereas inkjet printing typically requires the ink viscosity to be between 8 and 12 cP.
