WHY MICROSYSTEMS ARE IMPORTANTThere are many beneficial attributes of microsystems technology. First, microsystems are made using IC-like processes and this enables the ability to integrate multiple functionalities onto a single microchip. The ability to integrate miniaturized sensors, miniaturized actuators, and miniaturized structures along with microelectronics has far-reaching implications of countless products and applications, and is especially important for the implementation of the IoT. Second, microsystems borrow many production techniques of batch fabrication from the IC industry and therefore, the per-unit device or microchip cost of complex miniaturized electromechanical systems can be radically reduced—similar to the per-die cost reductions commonly seen in the IC industry. …
