HISTORY OF NANOTECHNOLOGYThe history of nanotechnology is a complicated story. Some cite a talk given by the renowned Nobel Prize winning physicist Richard Feynman in 1959 entitled, "There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom," as the first publically persuasive argument of the potential possibilities using the manipulation of matter at the atomic scale.3 In this talk, Professor Feynman outlined a number of very interesting and far-reaching possibilities, including highly dense ICs for computers, microscopes that could observe matters at the atomic scale, and micro-miniaturized pill-formed robots that could act as doctors on the patient.
