<emphasis role="bold">Introduction</emphasis> The global consumption (usage) of component-level light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in 2008 reached over 1.5 billion units, and it is forecast to increase to 3.8 billion LEDs by 2015. Exterior applications, driven by maintenance/labor, safety/security, and “Green-Tech” issues will continue to dominate the use of LEDs in solid-state general lighting. LED has come a long way!
