In a switching power supply, or point-of-load (POL) regulator, you might want to measure the switching related loss in the metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET), as it is a significant term in the overall efficiency. This switching loss can also be used to optimize the gate drive design or the selection of the switching frequency. In high-speed circuits, the interest is more often related to timing relationships, eye diagrams for signal integrity purposes, or for determining time jitter for an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) circuit.
