Preface
PrefaceThe development of electronics and the development of photonics have followed different routes. The development of integrated circuits has focused on the design, fabrication, and characterization of two basic devices: memory and microprocessor chips. This element of simplicity is one important reason for the extraordinary growth and success of the integrated circuit industry. On the other hand, there are many kinds of photonic devices: light emitters and detectors, modulators, phototransistors, waveguides, and switches, to name a few examples.
