<emphasis role="bold">Merging the Systems</emphasis> The production systems in the market today [enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, and manufacturing execution systems (MES)] have originated and grown from their individual areas of application. A large number of further functions, which are partly covered by other systems on the market, have been added to the originally specified core functions. This means that the systems overlap with regard to their characteristics.
