MethaneConverting and storing renewable electricity in the form of methane and injecting it in the natural gas grid is a viable approach for long term storage. The existing natural gas infrastructure can indeed be used with no needs for difficult and costly pipeline upgrades or the construction of new gas transport infrastructures to accommodate for hydrogen's small molecule transport issues. Methane can be used directly in turbines for electricity generation, for heating, and cooling purposes, or as an alternative fuel option for nonstationary applications. The production of methane from hydrogen and carbon-based species is called methanation.
