PrefaceElectric power systems are some of the most complicated machines ever constructed. They have been conceived, planned, and expanded to serve an ever-increasing population through the use of sophisticated mathematical models. This legacy of the twentieth century can provide reliable and economical electrical service throughout the twenty-first century, or it can be subject to an increasing number of devastating collapses. Three of the five most severe blackouts in the past 40 years occurred during 2000 to 2010. In the northeastern United States and Ontario, Canada, about 55 million people remember the blackout of August14, 2003, that was caused initially by faults from excess sag on overheated lines during a period of high temperature and low wind.
