Operating Principle A rotary drum thickener (also called a rotary screen thickener) consists of a flocculation tank with slow-speed mixer, an internally fed rotary drum, an integral internal screw or conveying flights, spray-wash system, filtrate collection tank, and a variable- or constant-speed drum drive (see Figure 21.21). A conditioning agent (typically polymer) is injected into the feed sludge and the mixture is sent to a flocculation tank.
