Biofilm Reactor Design Approaches and ConsiderationsSeveral design approaches, biofilm reactor model, and biofilm model types typically are used in engineering practice. The primary objective of biofilm or biofilm reactor models is to predict soluble substrate flux (J) into the biofilm. This flux information can be used to obtain an estimate of the (1) overall biofilm reactor performance; (2) required active biofilm surface area; (3) electron acceptor (e.g., dissolved oxygen); (4) external electron donor (e.g., methanol or hydrogen); and (5) biosolids management requirements.
