Sieve Sizes In the United States, soil classification methods employ the standard sieve sizes listed in Table 203.1. Also in use, but somewhat less common, are metric sieve sizes. For fine- grained soils, plasticity characteristics (Atterberg limits) play a more significant role than the particle size distribution, which is more significant for coarse-grained soils.
