Guidelines for Subsurface Sampling Soil exploration costs are typically about 0.1% to 0.5% of the ultimate cost of the structure. The number and type of samples to be taken depend on the stratification and material encountered. It is usually recommended to take representative disturbed samples at vertical intervals of no less than 5 ft and at every change in strata.
