General Concrete beams may be reinforced with tension reinforcement only (singly reinforced beams) or both tension and compression steel (doubly reinforced beams). A reinforced concrete beam may be singly reinforced as long as the amount of required reinforcement does not exceed the ACI limits on reinforcement. The reinforcement bars are placed in the tension zone with adequate cover.
