Theory of Operation The basic principles of magnetism and electromagnetic induction are the same for ac and dc motors, but the application of the principles is different because of the rapid reversals of direction and changes in magnitude characteristic of alternating current. Certain characteristics of ac motors make most types more efficient than dc motors; hence such motors are used commercially whenever possible. During recent years ac power systems have been developed for large aircraft with higher voltage and higher amperage capacity than ever before.
