THE MULTIMETERIn practice, the functions of a voltmeter, ohmmeter, and ammeter (or milliammeter) are usually combined in an instrument called a multimeter or volt-ohm-milliammeter (VOM). This combination instrument makes it possible to take a wide range of electrical measurements with just one basic instrument. One type of analog multimeter is shown in Fig. 8-23. This instrument will measure ac and dc voltage up to 1000 V, resistance from zero to infinity, and dc current from zero to 10 A.
