THE VOLTMETERA voltmeter of the moving-coil type actually measures the current flow through the instrument; but since the current flow is proportional to the voltage, the instrument may be marked in volts. The meter movement is adapted to the measurement of voltage by the use of series resistance.Figure 8-13 shows a schematic diagram of a voltmeter circuit. Assuming that the meter movement has a full-scale deflection at a current of 0.001 A and an internal resistance of 10 Ω, it is easily determined that 0.01 V is the maximum that can be applied to the instrument without the addition of a series resistance.
