General Theory There are several varieties of code systems used to convert information bits into letters or decimal numbers. The pure binary number system is often too clumsy for a computer to manipulate data quickly. Three of the more common systems used to produce a faster computer are called the binary-coded decimal, octal notation, and hexadecimal systems. All of these systems utilize the binary digits 1 and 0 to represent decimal, or base 10, numbers.
